Are you happy? Seriously. Are you? Do you wanna be happy? Do you have a strategy?
John Wooden is one of the great leaders of the past century. His 10 NCAA National Championships in 12 years while at UCLA are unmatched. He was a legendary basketball coach but an even better human and leader. His lessons on life and leadership are numerous.
He has his personal "Strategy for Happiness" on an index card that stays on his desk. He makes and keeps 9 promises to himself. Many of the promises benefit others when kept but he keeps his strategy card close to remind himself to do these things for his own well being and happiness. Pretty cool. I have found I am happiest when doing similar things.
Here are his 9 promises.
1. Promise that you will talk health, happiness and prosperity as often as possible
2. Promise to let all your friends know there is something in them that is special that you value
3. Promise to think only of the best, work only for the best, and expect only the best from yourself and others
4. Promise to be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are your own
5. Promise to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind
6. Promise to forget the mistakes of the past and press on to greater achievements in the future
7. Promise to always wear a cheerful appearance and give every person you meet a smile
8. Promise to spend so much time improving yourself that you have no time to criticize others
9. Promise to be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit trouble to press on you
I made the poster above to remind myself and my team of the value of those promises. We have it in our summit room. If you would like a copy, email me and I'll be happy to get you one for simply the cost of printing.
blessings, joy and peace
